Wildfire fuel reduction is defensible space at property scale. A grass fire you can step over becomes a catastrophe in two moves: it climbs, and it accelerates. Ladder fuels - brush and low growth standing between the ground and the tree canopy - are the climb. Continuous cured grass and thicket are the acceleration. Fuel reduction attacks both: cut the understory so there is no ladder, break up the continuity so fire has to work for every yard it gains.
That is why the work is selective rather than scorched-earth. Healthy mature trees with clean ground underneath are not the problem - they are the goal. We cut the brush and juvenile growth out from under them, take the dead material, and leave the property looking like parkland: open, walkable, and a far harder place for fire to run.
